Founder and director of MAAK architecture, Alex is a chartered architect with over 20 years of experience and has worked across many disciplines and scales within the industry. Alex has designed and delivered industrial, commercial, mixed-use, educational and residential projects from small extensions to 500 home developments.
Alex started his architectural journey with work experience at a local architect in his hometown of Groningen in The Netherlands. Here he experienced first hand how the Dutch homes, buildings and neighbourhoods seemed so much more inviting and people focussed in comparison to those in his native England. Nonetheless, instead of taking up his place at Delft university, Alex returned to England to study at Sheffield University and gained experience working in the Netherlands and Germany before starting his professional career in Bristol.
From the outset Alex has been focussed upon residential design, working for small, large and medium sized practices, from design concept to on-site completion, gaining experience at all stages of the design process, including masterplanning and environmental design, working for individuals to large scale developers and house builders. Alex has been a Code for Sustainable Homes, an architectural adviser to the Zero Carbon Hub, a Design Review Member for Lewisham Council and more recently a house builder.
His interest in delivering better quality homes in the UK led him to set up the innovative and multi award-winning SNUG homes initiative which aims to involve people and communities in the design and construction of their homes using Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). Alex is also a Director of the community focussed award-winning consultancy Ecomotive and is a Consultant Director for the urban design and regeneration specialist Urban Place Lab.
As MAAK architecture, Alex works with a small team of designers, illustrators and consultants to create teams delivering projects to all RIBA Stages.
SNUG homes & Ecomotive have won numerous awards for their work focussed upon low energy, low impact community led development
